Tour of the Vanoise in 7 days

This Tour of the Vanoise offers a gradual immersion into one of the largest protected areas in the Alps, at the heart of the national park founded in 1963. Sunlit forests, hanging alpine pastures, sparkling lakes, and glacial silhouettes shape a varied itinerary that invites discovery and observation. Guided by a passionate mountain leader, you will travel through a landscape that provides one of the finest habitats for alpine wildlife. Each stage ends at a carefully selected hut or guesthouse, allowing you to fully enjoy the mountain atmosphere. Luggage transfer adds real comfort, making it possible to savour this traverse to the fullest. A multi-day trek that favours attentive engagement with the environment and a sensitive experience of the massif.

Program

The day before – Welcome in Saint-Gervais
Meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Saint-Gervais Guides Office for a telephone briefing with your mountain leader, who will go over the final logistical details.

Day 1 – Plan Sec Hut
Meeting at 9:00 a.m. in the village of Sardières in the Maurienne, at the municipal car park near the church, where we hand over our bags to the luggage transfer service. We then set off on the hike and, after passing near a huge monolith that has stood in this Maurienne valley for ages, we climb along a very pleasant trail through pine forests with a Mediterranean feel. The calls of spotted nutcrackers will accompany us toward unusual cavernous rock formations at 2000 m altitude. Overnight at the remarkable Plan Sec hut.
Elevation gain: +800 m / -150 m

Day 2 – Orgère Hut
The start of the day is easy along the shores of the Amont and Aval lakes. To reach our first col of the trip, the Col de la Masse (2925 m), a very gradual trail awaits us—surely the perfect place to spot some wildlife. In case of fatigue or poor weather, an alternative area is possible.
Elevation gain: +720 m / -1000 m

Day 3 – Péclet-Polset Hut
We return to the Tarentaise via the Col de Chavière (2790 m), where the view is striking over major reference massifs such as the Écrins and Mont Blanc. The ascent is pleasant before descending toward the Péclet refuge and Lac Blanc, where we spend the night. As this is a true high-mountain hut, it is inaccessible for our travel bags.
Elevation gain: +960 m / -400 m

Day 4 – Guesthouse/hotel in Pralognan
Today we approach the Gébroulaz Glacier via the Col du Souffre, with the option, for those who wish, of ascending the shoulder at 2855 m. The descent will be a bit long… but entirely manageable. At the end of the stage, a short transfer is required to reach Pralognan. Overnight in a guesthouse or hotel in the village.
Elevation gain: +450 m / -1100 m

Day 5 – Entre Deux Eaux Hut
We head toward the Col de la Vanoise (2517 m), where a hut bears the name of President Félix Faure. The presence of the round and long lakes at the foot of the impressive faces of the Grande Casse alone makes the journey worthwhile. We then return to the Upper Maurienne, beautiful and wild.
Elevation gain: +700 m / -400 m

Day 6 – Plan du Lac Hut
We have chosen to spend two nights in this valley—it is far too interesting to rush through. Exploring the Chasseforêt area is unmissable for its natural diversity: remarkable plant life, dwarf willow, edelweiss, ptarmigan, golden eagle, chamois… A peaceful atmosphere that invites observation.
Elevation gain: +750 m / -750 m

Day 7 – Return to Sardières
The return is via a route yet to be defined, allowing for even more discoveries. To conclude this journey in the Vanoise, a 45-minute vehicle transfer is scheduled to reach Sardières. End of the trip around 5:00 p.m., group dispersal.
Elevation gain: +600 m / -600 m

The mountain leaders may adjust the program according to weather conditions, mountain conditions, and the participants’ skill level.

Details

Vanoise National Park forms one of the largest preserved natural areas in Europe, a landscape where glaciers, alpine pastures, and limestone cliffs flow together in a powerful harmony. This seven-day tour crosses the massif along an itinerary refined over years of exploration, favouring wild atmospheres and little-travelled valleys.

Between lakes, cols rising above 2900 m, and vast panoramas over the Grande Casse, Mont Blanc, and the Écrins, each stage allows you to experience the mountains at a contemplative pace: ibex, bearded vultures, ptarmigan, and remarkable alpine flora. Luggage transfer, available on most days, provides welcome comfort, allowing you to fully enjoy the landscapes.

From one mountain hut to the next, this tour combines high-altitude hiking, naturalist discovery, and immersion in the mineral, luminous landscapes emblematic of the Vanoise.

Repatriation

If you do not have “assistance–repatriation” insurance, we can offer one at a rate of €5/day.

Cancellation

We also offer optional “cancellation” insurance at a rate of €12/day. This insurance does not take into account the sporting nature of our trips. It must be taken out at the time of registration to be valid.

As a reminder, the cancellation insurance covers you from the moment you register until the day of the trip, should something happen that prevents you from attending. We apply cancellation fees as specified on our registration form and in our terms of sale. These fees may be reimbursed by the cancellation insurance if your reason for cancelling is covered.

If you pay by credit card, feel free to check the insurance included with it.

As a reminder, in the event of cancellation you must file your claim with the insurer within 5 days of the accident or reason for cancelling, otherwise it will not be valid (then check whether the reason for cancellation is covered).

Insurance fees are non-refundable.
