Ski touring to the Magia Refuge

In the heart of the Aosta Valley, the Saint-Barthélemy Valley provides ideal terrain for discovering ski mountaineering in a pristine alpine setting. From the Magia Refuge, several routes lead to panoramic summits overlooking the massif’s vast snow-covered combes. Accompanied by a high-mountain guide, you traverse varied and gradual slopes, perfect for a first immersion in ski touring. Between distant glaciers, Mont Blanc massif peaks, and open landscapes of the Italian Alps, the itinerary offers a balanced combination of progression and contemplation. The Magia Refuge, renowned for its warm hospitality and Aosta Valley cuisine, serves as a comfortable base in the heart of this wild territory. Two days to experience ski mountaineering and explore the winter mountains in all their authenticity.

Program

The evening before – Welcome in Saint-Gervais
Meet at 6:30 PM at the Saint-Gervais Guides’ Office to meet your guide, check your equipment, and prepare for the ski mountaineering outing in the Aosta Valley.

Day 1 – Mont Morion (2,711 m) or Col Tsomioy (2,642 m)
Depart from Saint-Gervais in the morning to reach Italy via the Mont Blanc Tunnel. After approximately 1 hour 30 minutes of driving, arrive in the Saint-Barthélemy Valley. With skis on, the route gradually ascends along the cross-country ski tracks before reaching the Magia Refuge, situated at 2,000 meters in a vast open alpine meadow. After a break at the refuge to drop off some gear, the day continues with a first ascent in the surrounding combes: Mont Morion or Col Tsomioy, depending on conditions. The progression takes place on consistent slopes, ideal for discovering ski touring in a panoramic setting. From the summit, the view extends over the mountains of the Aosta Valley and the high peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. Ski descent returns to the Magia Refuge, where the friendly atmosphere continues over a dinner of regional specialties.

Day 2 – Becca de Fontaney (2,972 m)
After breakfast at the refuge, the route gradually ascends the vast slopes leading to Becca de Fontaney. The progression takes place in an open environment, between snow-covered combes and panoramic ridges overlooking the Saint-Barthélemy Valley. The summit offers an outstanding viewpoint over the Aosta Alps and the major glaciers of the Mont Blanc massif. After a break at the summit, the descent covers nearly 1,400 meters of vertical drop, alternating wide slopes and forested sections before reaching the valley floor. Return to Saint-Gervais in the mid-afternoon.

The guides may adjust the itinerary according to the weather, mountain conditions, and participants’ abilities.

Located north of Aosta, the Saint-Barthélemy Valley provides terrain particularly suited to ski mountaineering. The open slopes and wide combes offer numerous gradual routes, allowing participants to discover the discipline in a wild and unspoiled environment.

From the Magia Refuge, several ski-touring-accessible summits allow exploration of varied terrain, alternating gentle slopes, hanging valleys, and panoramic ridges. This diversity of routes makes it an ideal location for a first ski mountaineering experience with a high-mountain guide.

The atmosphere of the Aosta Valley also adds a cultural and gastronomic dimension to this alpine getaway. The Magia Refuge, situated in the heart of the valley, offers renowned regional cuisine and serves as a comfortable base for exploring the surrounding mountains and fully enjoying the ski touring experience.

Dates

Weekends from early December to the end of March, depending on snow conditions.
Other weekday dates available on request for private groups.

Registration and payment

Directly on our website or using the dated and signed registration form, accompanied by a 40% deposit and any optional insurance fees. The balance must be paid 60 days before departure.

Supervision and participants

Maximum of 5 participants per guide. Group departures are guaranteed from 4 participants. You will be guided by a high-mountain guide.

Physical and technical level

For skiers in good physical condition with experience in all-snow conditions. Some ski touring experience is a plus but not mandatory, provided you are confident skiing off-piste. Feel free to contact us if you are unsure about the required level.

You will be traveling on an unmarked high-mountain route; you must be aware of the hazards associated with this activity (rockfall, avalanches, very low temperatures).

  • Transport to the starting point of the expedition (clients typically provide transportation for the guide).

Insurance

Repatriation

Having “assistance–repatriation” insurance is mandatory to take part in our trips: it must cover you in high mountains for search and rescue by helicopter. If you do not have “assistance–repatriation” insurance, we can provide one at a rate of €5/day.

Cancellation

We also offer optional “cancellation” insurance at a rate of €12/day. This insurance does not take into account the sporting nature of our trips. It must be purchased at the time of registration to take effect.
As a reminder, cancellation insurance covers you from the moment you register until your trip date, if something happens and you cannot attend. We apply cancellation fees listed on our registration form and terms of sale. These fees may be reimbursed by the cancellation insurance if your reason for cancelling is covered.

If you pay by credit card, feel free to check the insurance included with it.

As a reminder, in the event of cancellation you must file your claim with the insurer within 5 days of the accident or reason for cancelling, otherwise it will not be valid (then check whether the reason for cancellation is covered).

Insurance fees are non-refundable.

Technical equipment

  • Backpack with a ski-carry system and sufficient capacity (approx. 30–40 liters)
  • Light ski touring skis with clean bases and crampons compatible with the bindings
  • Skins sized to the width of the skis and properly glued
  • Ski touring boots. It is essential to protect friction zones (heels, etc.) with Compeed and Elasto from the very first day.
  • Ski poles with large baskets
  • Avalanche transceiver, shovel, and collapsible probe

  • Beanie/balaclava/fleece headband and neck gaiter (buff), plus a cap for sun protection
