Rock climbing initiation

In the heart of the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve, this two-day trip introduces the fundamentals of rock climbing on alpine terrain. The Roches Rouges ridge followed by the Cicle Spur offers varied progression, from panoramic ridge sections and rocky steps to beautiful pitches in rock shoes. The gentle, immersive approach allows you to experience the atmosphere of alpine routes while learning essential techniques. Accompanied by a mountain guide, you will enjoy the peaceful setting of the Refuge des Prés and the sculpted gneiss that defines the character of the area.

Program

The day before – Arrival in Saint-Gervais
Meeting at 6:30 PM at the Saint-Gervais Guides’ Office to meet your guide and prepare for the two days of climbing.

Day 1 – Col de la Fenêtre
From the top of the Signal gondola, we head up to the Col de la Fenêtre (2245m), then follow the ridge toward the Tête de la Cicle (2552m). The start is an easy grassy and rocky ridge, followed by a few steeper steps and a traverse of small towers leading to the summit. After a picnic break, a fairly steep path brings us down to the Col de la Cicle and the end of the difficulties. The very comfortable Refuge des Prés is just below, where we will spend the night.

Day 2 – Cicle Spur
From the hut, we follow the same path as the day before to reach the start of the Cicle Spur. It is climbed via a beautiful sequence of about ten short pitches graded 4b–4c. The descent follows the same path as the previous day back to the hut, then traverses beneath the Aiguille de Roselette to reach the top of the gondola.

Les guides peuvent adapter le programme en fonction des conditions météorologiques, des conditions de la montagne et du niveau des participants.

Details

This introductory rock climbing trip takes place in the protected environment of the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve, at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif. The itinerary combines two complementary styles: a ridge route ideal for discovering movement on varied terrain, followed by an accessible multi-pitch climb offering the opportunity to climb pitches in rock shoes on high-quality gneiss.

The Roches Rouges ridge offers a gentle, panoramic atmosphere, with small steps and towers that are perfect for learning how to move on rock. The Cicle Spur, steeper but still accessible, introduces the basic techniques of multi-pitch climbing: managing belays, communication, and pacing through the pitches.

Around the Refuge des Prés, this program introduces the full range of rock mountaineering, with steady progression and guidance from a mountain guide who teaches essential techniques with clarity and precision.
