Introductory ice climbing

Dive into a unique ice adventure: this introduction lets you discover the vertical world of icefalls in a magical setting. Guided by a mountain guide, you’ll learn the basics of winter mountaineering techniques: crampons, ice axes, and placing ice screws. The Notre-Dame de la Gorge site, illuminated in the evenings for the occasion, offers an ideal setting for a fun and safe introduction to the activity.

Program

  • Schedule: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., or other times for private sessions
  • Access: Notre-Dame de la Gorge parking 500 m away or shuttle stop 200 m away

Meet at the magical site of Notre-Dame de la Gorge in Les Contamines-Montjoie. The area is easily accessible, at the foot of a frozen waterfall surrounded by fir trees.

Your mountain guide welcomes you and provides the necessary equipment: helmet, harness, and ice axes. After a few explanations about how the session will unfold and a simple safety briefing — how to move on ice, hold your ice axes, and take your first steps with crampons.

With the guide’s advice, you learn to find your balance, place your ice axes, and gently climb a few meters up the wall. The main goal is to build confidence and discover the unique sensations of ice climbing: the sound of the crampons and the satisfaction of reaching the top!

Regular breaks allow you to observe, catch your breath, and enjoy the magical surroundings.
At the end of the session, a friendly debrief gives you the chance to talk about the experience and, for those who wish, prepare for a next step toward a more technical outing.
