Ice Climbing Weekend in Cogne

Cogne is one of the premier ice climbing destinations in the Alps, renowned for the variety of its routes and the quality of its winter atmosphere. This two-day weekend allows you to progress in your practice, whether climbing as a second or learning the basics of self-reliance. With the guidance of a mountain guide, each route is chosen according to your preferences and level. Between wild valleys, sculpted ice cascades, and the warmth of Italian hospitality, this stay offers an ideal ice climbing immersion.

Program

The day before Arrival in Saint-Gervais
Meeting at 6:30 PM at the Saint-Gervais Guides’ Office to meet your guide.

Day 1
Early morning departure from Saint-Gervais to Cogne, climbing in one of the two valleys. Examples of climbs depending on level: Sentinel Ice, Thoule, Lillaz, Lillaz Gully… Overnight in a hotel in Cogne.

Day 2
Climb another ice cascade deeper in one of the two valleys. Examples: Patri, Cold Couloir, or for the more experienced, Repentance Super. Return to Saint-Gervais.

The examples of routes or locations are provided for guidance only. The guide may adjust the program based on weather conditions, mountain conditions, or participants’ skill levels.

Details

This ice climbing weekend in Cogne offers an exceptional setting to gradually improve your winter climbing techniques. The two classic valleys of the area — Valnontey and Lillaz — feature numerous routes, from easy ice climbs to more challenging cascades, allowing everyone to progress at their own pace.

The focus is on fundamental techniques: ice tool placement, crampon use, rope management, communication, and adapting to the natural shapes of the ice. The varied sites and moderate approaches make it an ideal setting to build skill and confidence.

Accompanied by a mountain guide, you will explore a pristine environment, among frozen walls, sunlit valleys, and a warm Italian atmosphere. A short, immersive stay, perfect for enhancing your winter mountaineering skills.

Dates

From mid-December to March, depending on ice conditions.
For groups: every weekend.
For private bookings: daily.

Registration and payment

Directly on our website or using the dated and signed registration form, accompanied by a 40% deposit and any optional insurance fees. The balance must be paid 60 days before departure.

Supervision and participants

The course will be led by a mountain guide (or guide-in-training). Group departures are guaranteed from 2 participants.

Physical and technical level

Be in good physical condition. For those with some ice climbing experience or who have completed a beginner course. Feel free to contact us if you are unsure about the required level.

Private booking rates:
1 participant: €1340 per person
2 participants: €760 per person
3 participants: €950 per person

The price includes

  • Guidance by a mountain guide
  • Harness, helmet, and ice axes
  • Half‑board accommodation at the hotel in Cogne
  • Packed lunches
  • Mont Blanc Tunnel fee

The price does not include

  • Boots and crampons
  • Drinks and energy bars
  • Transport to Italy (it is customary for clients to drive the guide)
  • Anything not listed under “the price includes”

Insurance

Repatriation

Having “assistance–repatriation” insurance is mandatory to take part in our trips: it must cover you in high mountains for search and rescue by helicopter. If you do not have “assistance–repatriation” insurance, we can provide one at a rate of €5/day.

Cancellation

We also offer optional “cancellation” insurance at a rate of €12/day. This insurance does not take into account the sporting nature of our trips. It must be purchased at the time of registration to take effect.
As a reminder, cancellation insurance covers you from the moment you register until the start of your trip if something happens and you cannot attend. We apply cancellation fees as specified on our registration form and in our terms of sale. These fees may be reimbursed by the cancellation insurance if your reason for cancelling is covered.


If you pay by credit card, feel free to check the insurance included with it.

As a reminder, in the event of cancellation you must file your claim with the insurer within 5 days of the accident or reason for cancelling, otherwise it will not be valid (then check whether the reason for cancellation is covered).

Insurance fees are non-refundable.

Equipment list

  • Rigid-soled mountaineering boots (not too tight and compatible with crampons) + crampons
  • Helmet
  • Ice climbing axes
  • Harness with carabiner
  • Gaiters
  • Backpack
  • Warm clothing that effectively protects against the wind:
    Waterproof and windproof Gore-Tex pants and jacket, down jacket, and thick fleece
  • Technical base layers: long-sleeve shirt and warm leggings
  • Beanie and neck gaiter (Buff)
  • 2 pairs of gloves: lightweight gloves + warm, waterproof gloves
  • Sunscreen and lip balm + sunglasses
  • Thermos with hot drink, energy bars and/or dried fruit
  • Personal first aid kit: painkillers, Compeed blister patches, Elastoplast, bandages. There’s no need to carry a more extensive kit unless advised by your doctor.

Rendez-vous

You will meet the guides the day before departure at the Saint-Gervais Guides Office (43 rue du Mont Blanc, 74170 Saint-Gervais), located inside the tourist office in the village center, at 6:30 p.m. Please let us know if you cannot attend; the briefing can be done by phone.
